A Walsall man who works with West Midlands Fire Service’s (WMFS) Road Casualty Reduction Team has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours
Stuart Fisher (32), has received the prestigious title in recognition of his service to the communities of the West Midlands and the WMFS in promoting safer driving.
Stuart works tirelessly to achieve this, despite suffering horrific injuries himself after being involved in a road traffic collision (RTC) which left him with severe multiple disabilities and in need of round the clock care for the rest of his life. He was on a pedestrian crossing when he was struck by a stolen car driving on the wrong side of the road at the seafront in Blackpool in August 1995.
As a result of his injuries he spent seven months in a coma. After regaining consciousness he found himself with severe disabilities, relying on his family to assist him in his day-to-day life, the activities most people take for granted - like washing, dressing, and getting around. .
Stuart has worked with the WMFS’s Road Casualty Reduction Team for several years, visiting schools, colleges, youth offending teams, pupil referral units and youth clubs, to take part in ‘Your Choice on the Road’ (The WMFS Road Casualty Reduction education programme).
The Helicopter footage of the accident - from Lancashire police - and a road safety docu-drama produced featuring it, has been used in road safety education across the country. Stuart has a profound effect on all those he meets on road safety programmes, leaving them with a hard-hitting vision of the consequences of irresponsible driving and road traffic collisions.
