Tributes to Southampton Firefighters

7th April 2010

The tragic deaths of two Southampton firefighters has once again brought a reminder of the dangers faced by firefighters when tackling blazes in towerblocks.

Communities Secretary John Denham said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with the families of the two firefighters who have tragically lost their lives in the fire in Southampton yesterday.

The incident brings home to us the professionalism and dedication of the men and women working in our fire and rescue services and of the debt of gratitude we owe them. I've asked Sir Ken Knight, the Government's Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser, to keep me in close contact with the investigations into this tragic incident and identify any lessons to be learnt."

The Union Flag is flying at half mast at Strathclyde Fire & Rescue premises out of respect for the two Hampshire Fire & Rescue firefighters who lost their lives last night.

In a message to SFR personnel, Chief Officer Brian Sweeney said: "Our thoughts are with the Firefighters' families, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."
