Firefighter Aims to Climb Everest

Firefighter Jonathan Davies is well used to rope rescue thanks to his day-to-day role at Coulby Newham in Middlesbrough as part of the team at the busy station. However, his skills will be tested to the limit, and his colleagues will be thousands of miles away, when he takes on the world’s largest mountain in May by scaling Mount Everest.

Seasoned climber Jonathan, 34, is a 12-year veteran of Cleveland Fire Brigade and his move to push himself to face the ultimate climbing challenge is motivated by personal drive and also charitable causes as he will be raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

He will be climbing the 29,028 feet or 5.5 miles in May and will be spending eight weeks in Nepal at the foot of the Himalayas acclimatising to the challenge. The actual climb will take three days and the weather has been known to be a massive factor in the success of climbs with some of the most challenging conditions in climbing.

Jonathan, said: “It’s the ultimate challenge and requires conditioning and preparation. By not preparing properly then you risk serious injury or worse. Obviously, in my role as a firefighter we’re used to climbing with high stakes on occasion but this is more than five miles in a low oxygen environment. Thankfully, because of that low oxygen I won’t have to face any fires up there so it won’t be a busman’s holiday!!

Colleagues at the station have been really supportive and wished me luck but I won’t be sending postcards as I think post-boxes are a bit rare on the mountain.”

Jonathan will be keeping a video blog of his exploits which will be accessible via Cleveland Fire Brigade’s website www.clevelandfire.gov.uk or by logging onto http://jdaviesoneverest.blogspot.com. People wishing to sponsor Jonathan should do so via his blog.
